Let's get started, shall we? We are sitting down with Jenn this morning. Let's find out what you've got in your cup:
Water! I always drink ice water…I LOVE it!
Introduce yourself to our readers, Jenn:
Hi, I’m Jenn, sometimes known as “Cool Mama”, from Coolest Family on the Block. I'm a domestically-challenged, Christian, stay-at-home mom to my 2.5 year old daughter, 4 month old son, and a furbaby. I like to blog about our family and the traditions we're creating together. I like pajamas, chocolate, and bursting into song at inappropriate moments. My house is dirty and I think I’m hilarious.
How did you come up with the title of your blog? What is the story behind "The Coolest Family on the Block"?
When I decided to start a blog I actually had a slew of great blog names to choose from (call it a gift). I thought the title was catchy and that it fit with my bloggy purpose.
I don’t care if our family is the coolest one on the block. What I do care about is that my kids think that we’re the coolest family on the block. It’s not about being their friend. It’s not about being the “cool mom” that lets them do whatever they want and give them whatever they ask for. But it is about realizing that just because we’re parents, just because we’re responsible for discipline, just because there are dishes to be done and bills to be paid…doesn’t mean that we can’t have good clean fun with our kids! I believe if I make the effort to spend quality time with my kids, if I’m not afraid to get a little silly or a little dirty, and if I help make them feel special and loved…my kids will think that we are definitely the coolest family on the block! I don’t want to have the coolest family on the block…I want every family to have the coolest family on the block. I hope to accomplish that with my blog. (You can read more about that here: http:// coolestfamilyontheblock.com/ 2011/03/18/why-coolest-family- on-the-block/)
What is one post that you want everyone who comes to your blog to read and what was your inspiration for writing that post?
Okay, let me just say that this decision was sheer torture. Torture, I tell you! I really don’t have one particular post that encompasses what my entire blog is about, and I didn’t want to select the wrong one. I even asked my husband to help me pick and he was like, “Dude, just pick something, but not something sad, something funny.” (Except maybe he didn’t actually call me dude.) Through a random drawing I have selected “10 Way to Shake Up Your Christmas Pajamas Tradition”.
This was actually my feature post for the SITS girls (http://www.thesitsgirls.com) back in 2010 when I had only been blogging a few months. We really love Christmas in our family and receiving new jammies each year on Christmas Eve is a beloved tradition for us. I’m always looking to add in new traditions as well so that’s where the inspiration for this post came from.
We do realize that asking bloggers to choose a favorite blog post might be as difficult as asking them to pick a favorite child! We'll head over and check this one out--but don't worry we'll stick around to check out a few more too! :)
Right now we see your blog as a place to read about your family and traditions. I love your latest post celebrating National Police Week. We have some police officers in the family (My brother being one)--
Cool Daddy is a Police Officer and those fellas don’t get enough credit and recognition in my opinion.
I also love that you have shared your knowledge about infertility and your birth stories. There is plenty for us to dig into--from sharing fun family traditions, crafts and projects to your fun, easy going "cool" style of writing. Has it always been your approach to blog in this way and where do you see your blog going and growing to in the future?
Yep. I’ve blogged like this from the very beginning. I can “talk purdy” if I want to, but for a blog I prefer a more relaxed style of writing and hope that my readers feel like they know me when they read. Just imagine me sitting next to you in spit up covered pajamas and you have the full effect (Now you want to be my friend, don’t you?).
Unfortunately, I’ve slacked off on blogging since my son was born. I’m struggling to find time to write without either neglecting the children or falling asleep at the keyboard. Once I find my bloggy groove I guess it will be up to my readers to decide where the blog goes. Right now I write personal family stuff (mommy stories) and incorporate in the traditions and family fun ideas. I’d be willing to separate those in the future if needed. I’d like to continue to grow my blog and expand my readership but not at the expense of family time and without compromising my blog purpose or writing style. I’d really like to see my readers begin to comment and interact more. I’d love for people to send me their ideas and traditions to feature, whether it’s something they tried from my blog or something new entirely.
Congrats on your newest little one. An addition to the family can certainly throw a wrench in the old groove. I'm sure, when you are ready, the blog world will receive you with open arms.
So tell us, what makes you "More than a Mommy"?
This is a tough question for me because, honestly, after nearly 3 years of motherhood I’m still trying to figure that out. I spent 5 years just trying to get pregnant and 3 years parenting. Becoming and being mommy is such a part of who I am that it’s tough to step outside of that and say, “This is who I am without my kids…” Or maybe it’s tough because I already loved tea parties, Disney movies, and dancing with Christmas decorations on my head even before I had kids.
Apart from my kids, I love to write (even though at the moment I write mostly about them). Writing is my favorite hobby and I’d love to have more time for it. While I do enjoy blogging, I’d really like to find the time to begin working on some writing projects I’ve had rolling around my head for years. I also love to read, but these days I can’t seem to stay awake to read anything longer than a Dr. Seuss book.
