July Book Club: Love in a Nutshell by Janet Evanovich

This month we dove into Janet Evanovich's, Love in a Nutshell. And in a nutshell, if you like a fluffy, quick,  easy reading mystery with a touch of romance, this book is for you.  The book may leave true mystery lovers yearning for more. Come to think of it, it might leave true romance lovers yearning for more.

The consensus at our monthly meeting was that the book was okay.  No one disliked it, but there wasn't much to talk about. The protagonist and her love interest are like-able (perhaps a little too like-able). The mystery took a few twists but never really left us trying to figure anything out for ourselves. In the end, when we find out who-dun-it many of us were shocked. But not for the reason that you think! It wasn't that anything unpredictable happened, but merely that everything tied itself up too quickly and when the last page was turned, we thought--well, I guess that's all there is!

I wish I had more to say. This book has a co-author, Dorien Kelly.  I find it quite interesting when a book has a co-author.  How much of this book was actually written by the recognizable author of the Stephanie Plum Series,  Janet Evanovich? A few of our readers have read other Evanovich books and ranked them a seven out of ten, where this book fell at about a three on a one to ten scale (where ten is the best). We spent half of our meeting talking about what we have been reading this summer, let's just say my "to read" list has grown.  Share with us what you have been reading--we love to add to that list and perhaps you'll see a favorite make it onto the book club list in the future!

If you are looking for some entertainment on a rainy Saturday or need a read for the poolside than Love in a Nutshell is an option. It does have its moments of humor, with a dash of mystery, and romance. And it is an easy read,  if not a bit ho-hum.

We want to hear what you thought of the book. Are you feeling what we're feeling? Did you love it/hate it? Have you read anything else by Evanovich--how does this compare? Leave your insights in the comments section.

Hopefully August's selection has a good story with meat on its bones and lots of fodder for discussion. I'm excited to start turning pages!

We will be reading:

The First Annual Grand Prairie Rabbit Festival by Ken Wheaton

  1. I loved this book as a fun, light read.  As a departure from the Plum books (of which I have read all of!), this was fun change.  I wondered that too--how do you really co-author a book?  I would find this challenging, but then, I'm not a professional author, so...?  Anyway, I liked it and will check out your next recommendation too :)
