The Sunday Sip: Fill Up Your Cup with Rebecca from New Momma Beckers

You know it, we love it: Welcome to The Sunday Sip, the weekly feature where we take a break from our normal routine and sit down to chat with another fabulous blogger. Thanks for joining us today as we sit down with Rebecca from New Momma Beckers

Welcome to the Sunday Sip, Rebecca! First tell us what is in your cup and then tell us a little about yourself:

It's always coffee - I am a huge coffee fan/addict, especially when it's brewed from freshly ground beans! On Sunday morning, I'll typically wake up just in time to brew a pot and pour it into a travel mug before my husband and I wake up Troy, get ourselves ready, and rush over to church so we can sneak in 10 minutes late. :)

I'm a new mom to a wonderful eight-month-old, and I am working to lose weight in a healthy, non-reckless way! I was inspired to get healthy after giving birth - and since I gave birth, I've lost about 40 pounds! I have 86 pounds more to lose to get my body to a healthy BMI - but I'm not in a hurry (this is a lifestyle change, not an overnight solution). What I really want is to change bad habits into good ones!

Your weight loss is inspiring!  Congratulations for taking the first steps to a healthier you. So does your new lifestyle have anything to do with your blog name? Why did you choose "New Momma Beckers"?

I chose the name "New Momma Beckers" because in the days after my son was born, I vowed to change the way I look at health! As a teenager, I thought being attractive was the only reason to eat healthy - then as I got older, I became more confident, and didn't worry as much about how I looked. I didn't worry about how I ate, either! But when Troy was born, I realized that eating healthy is about more than looking good in a swimsuit - I want to live long enough to see my son graduate from college, get married, and have children of his own.
troy and mommy after workout.JPG
In other words, I changed the way I looked at healthy eating - and that changed me. I'm not just a new mom, I'm a new Beckers!

Well it sounds like you have the right outlook! So when we stop over to visit what is the first post that we should read at New Momma Beckers?

If I had one post I think everyone should read, it's a post I wrote about learning how to love working out:

When I began an exercise routine, I would dread going - even though I enjoyed the workout itself! The reason I didn't look forward to it was because my brain had been programmed (by the past, teenager me) to
hate exercising. But the good news is that you can reprogram your brain, even as an adult! This post is all about how I'm doing that - and how you can too!

The last time I visited your blog I could tell that you put a lot of heart into your writing. It seems like the perfect place for you to share your family's story: From your weight loss journey, to reviews of products you love, to adventures you take--with pictures to help document it all. I love how you are inviting us all into this journey that you are on. So what was your intention when you began blogging and where do you see yourself going?

That's such a wonderful description of my blog, thank you!! I write about how even though the days as a mommy can be long, the months and years whiz by, so it's important to take the time to enjoy special moments, and not to stress out by sweating the small stuff! As Troy gets older (and our family grows), I'll continue writing about the fun places we go, the products we try, and my progress getting healthy and providing a good example of health for Troy!

It does sound like you are getting the hanG of our More Than Mommy Philosophy--so tell us, what makes you more than a mommy?

Becoming a mother has changed me in a lot of ways, including how I see myself and my priorities - but at my  core, I'm still the same girl I was growing up in Southern California - with a thirst for adventure (that got me in trouble now and then), a silly sense of humor, and a big heart!

All right! Let's head over to New Momma Beckers  and introduce ourselves and show her some comment love! You can tweet with her @newmommabeckers. Go and LIKE her Facebook Page and check out her Pinterest  boards!

Have a fabulous Sunday!

Could have. Should have. Would have? Five Question Friday

Yesterday had me a tad thrown off because somehow I deleted the morning alarm on my phone and we all woke up late. It was a mad rush to get out the door and I spent the rest of the day trying to catch up to the hour that I lost to sleep. Don't get me wrong, I do love sleep as much as the next person--but the adrenaline rush of getting six people to the bus stop in T minus 10 minutes kind of negates the extra hour of rest! In any case, it's nice to jump on here on a Friday morning and answer some fun questions.
We invite you to get to know us, read some of our other 5QF submissions or check out some of our other stuff this week. We are always happy to meet new readers and hear from the ones that have been stalking reading us from the beginning. But do one thing for us--LEAVE A COMMENT!  :) Oh, and have a good Friday!

1. Do you prefer to drive to your vacation spot or fly?

Christine - I don't think I have a preference. I like flying (although I've never flown with my kids), but I don't get to fly very often--too expensive. Lately we've been keeping our vacations within a reasonable driving distance. And as long as no one gets car sick (don't ask about the time I had to hold a car sick PUPPY in my arms for two hours--hands down, the most disgusting car trip of my life) and the complaining can be drowned out by the "Ultimate Long Drive" playlist, then I'm good!

Janene - We haven't been on a vacation that has required flying lately, either.  I think I would prefer to fly, though . . . I know that 1/2 the fun is getting there but once you get there the fun REALLY starts, so why not make the getting there a little "easier" and start the party!

2. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

Christine - I do enjoy where I live now, because I enjoy the four seasons. The cold weather seasons, I do think I could do without, though.  Winter home in a warm and sunny climate? Don't mind if I do. I don't know if I could convince the whole family to move with me though...and I would miss them all too much to move away.

Janene - Live?  I, like Christine, would have to take my entire family . . . and my husband's entire family . . . but I would probably like to go west, actually.  I'm not exactly sure where because I've never really done a lot of research, knowing that my family and DH's would never agree to a big move all together.

3. Should grown women wear leggings?

Christine - I think it depends on what is being worn with them. I've seen some lovely outfits that include a pair of leggings (worn more like tights--with cute boots and belted top that covers the derriere) that would look appropriate on a thirty something. I'm no one to be giving fashion advice or acting as a fashion police woman though. You're looking at the president of the I-do-not-heart-shopping fan club.

Janene - Is it alright if I just say NO and move on?  I have A TON of packing to do and really need to get to it!  hehehe

4. If you could change your name to any other name, would you? And what would it be?

Christine - As a child I remember wanting a different name. I went to a Catholic grade school and in my class there were four Christinas, and two Christophers.  I was the only Christine but if you called out "Hey Chris!" you would have seven people turning around. I always wanted something a bit more unique. But now I don't mind. I don't meet as many Christines these days. So I'll keep it!

Janene - I have a pretty unique name with a very unique spelling so it isn't the uniqueness that I would be looking for if I changed my name.  I think if I would change my name it would be only because I would want my name to have some kind of special meaning or to be named after someone.  Oddly enough, I have this Sark journal that asks what our "secret" name is and I picked Morgana after the sorceress in the King Arthur legend.

5. What magazines to you have subscriptions to?

Christine - I've let all my subscriptions run out. I do enjoy thumbing through a magazine though. My favorite is Real Simple.  I also had a subscription to Cooking Light that I loved.  Those are probably my top two. I'm also riveted by the gossip mag covers in the checkout aisle...but despite devouring them with interest while waiting for the belt to be clear, I have never once purchased one!

Janene - Rachel Ray, Better Homes and Gardens, Family Fun and Sports Illustrated.  All of which I have not contacted to inform that we are moving!  Anyone know how I do that?  :)

Head on over to My Little Life and check out other great bloggers and their answers to these questions!  Don't forget PLEASE - Leave us a COMMENT and let us know the answer to your favorite question, too!!!  ;)

Book Club: The Bronxville Book Club

Have you ever wanted to join a book club? Around six years ago Janene and I were invited by a mutual friend to join a group of book worms (and wannabe book worms) to form a casual group that would meet monthly to discuss a variety of books.  At the time I was a a new mom of two--and it was around that time that the seed for "More than Mommies" was planted (believe it or not).

You don't think things happen for a reason?  When I decided to join  book club I was lonely -- virtually friendless -- with no girlfriends nearby to commiserate with and be supported by. I was a stay at home mom with two little girls and my youngest had special needs that were demanding and draining me of my own health and well being. I was giving the very best of myself to her (and my oldest) and I was keeping my head just above water. I didn't know any better at the time--I thought this is what being a mom was: Putting EVERYTHING second to the new little people in my life.

When I didn't recognize the bedraggled woman staring back at me from the full length mirror in my bedroom I took the first steps to finding her: "The More Than Mommy" who was hiding deep under layers of crusted baby food, eye baggage, sagging skin and thinning hair. I joined a faith sharing group at my church and met a fellow young mother (Not by chance I tell you and I think she would agree!). She started a book club and extended the invitation. I accepted.

Shortly after joining, I met Janene, I didn't know her before or outside of book club. Somewhere along the way, Janene introduced me to blogging (I had written on-line before when I kept a Care Page for Ava--but I wasn't familiar with the blog world). She had been blogging at Perfecting Imperfection for a while. I decided to start a blog called What Little Girls are Made of.  Less than a year ago (after adding two more kids a piece), Janene invited me to join forces, and More than Mommies was born. Within the first month of blogging together, we decided to open our real life book club to our online friends at More than Mommies. And here we are...full circle...my friends.  Except on this side of the circle, I am a fuller, happier, and better mommy than I was when I began!

When we picked The Bronxville Book Club by Pamela Hackett Hobson as our pick this month, I was personally excited. I had high hopes for this book because I thought there could be lots of potential for an interesting story, diverse characters, and a moving experience.  Well, that isn't what we got with this book.

I've been dreading sitting down to write this book club re-cap.

I am a careful reader/writer who tries to see the best in a book. When most of our fellow book clubbers say they "hate it", I tend to think about the writer--pouring his/her life and soul into weaving a story--and I can find something about it to appreciate.

So here is what I will say about The Bronxville Book Club:

This book proves to me that not everyone is meant to write a book. Honestly, I feel cheated by this writer.

There is no substance here. No plot, no riveting characters, no moving story. Nothing really to talk about--except that the characters of this book are stereotypical and lifeless, each of them cast from the exact same mold--despite their varying occupations and backgrounds.

So what do we do at a book club meeting when the book doesn't provide a fodder for discussion? Well, we talk about our lives: caring for aging parents, sharing fears about raising teenagers, discussing the timing of  "THE talk" with our kids and asking for advice about the right time to allow our daughters to shave their legs and/or wear makeup, among other things. Regardless of my thoughts about this book (it sucked), I can not think of a better way that I could spend a couple hours each month--honestly, I love our group and I love those ladies!

I know that many of our real life book clubbers will click over to the blog today to read this month's recap, so I ask that you leave us a comment and tell us how book club changed you or what you get from it each month. Why do you keep reading, but specifically, why do you keep reading with our book club?

And if you are new to More than Mommies I hope you'll stick around!  Tell us in the comments, why you would like to join a book club, or what reading has meant to you (our group is not exclusive though--anyone can join us!) Learn more about our book club and join us for next month when we discuss:

You can purchase your copy right from this page or visit the More than Mommies Shop to look at previous selections and purchase your copies. Follow our Book Club Pinterest Board. Join the discussion on Facebook by liking us or Tweet with us!

and Happy Reading!

Next Time . . . Tips for New Home Buyers

Ahhh . . . buying a home.  It's a lot more stressful the second time around.

I think it's because now I have a more definite idea of what I want and a longer list of things I DON'T want in my next home.  I remember when Jerry and I were looking for our first house.  Our price range was significantly lower than it is this time around and a lot of the houses in that price range were ones I knew we couldn't live in.  There was a weird house that had 2 kitchens (one on the first floor and one on the second) and was a rectangle instead of a square.  This might not be weird to other people . . . but to me (I've always lived in square houses and know people who live in square houses) it was the strangest thing ever.  I felt like I was at Willy Wonka's Chocolate factory walking down the hall towards that little door that kept getting farther and farther away.  I knew I couldn't live there.

Then there was the house that you could see through the floor boards into the basement.  We weren't looking for a fixer upper . . . so that one was out.  There was one that was up on a hill a little and I felt like I had to lean back when I walked around in it . . . that might have been great for my calf muscles but I doubt I would enjoy feeling like I was going to slide down the bed when I was trying to sleep.

A lot of the houses we looked at really lacked the kind of yard we were hoping to find.  A lot of them needed more work than we were willing to put into them.  A few of them were in areas that we just didn't want to live in.

When we finally found the house we are in now we thought it was PERFECT!  I think that part of the reason we thought it was so awesome was because of all of the BAD houses we had seen.  Looking back, we probably did buy the nicest house in the area, in our price range at that time.  It had 3 bedrooms and we only needed 1!  It had a beautiful big deck and a nice fenced in back yard.  You could stand up in the basement (unlike others we looked at).  There were only 3 steps to get in the front door and it had a nice front porch.  ALL of those things are still true . . . plus, we bought the lot next door when my neighbor's house burned down - so the yard is twice as big now!

However, shortly after we bought the place,  I was walking around with my friend, Jason, showing him all of the different rooms and where we were putting this or that.  We walked into the room that is now the twins' room and I said, "This is going to be the Computer Room".  He laughed and asked where we were going to plug it in!  I NEVER noticed that there wasn't a single outlet in that room!!!

Living in this house, which I thought was perfect at the time, has taught me a lot about what is REALLY important when you are looking at houses.  So - I give you a list of 10 things that my next house will have!  If you are looking for your first house, take these things into consideration because they are more important than you would think!

1.  A storage closet on the first floor - we have cute hooks that we hang our coats on right inside the door and I HATE looking at them all of the time (looking at them on the floor after they fall off the hooks).  My next house will have a closet that these coats will go in . . . and maybe the vacuum cleaner, too!

2.  BIG closets - I never looked at the closet space in this house when we were buying it.  I loved so many of the other things that I never REALLY paid attention.  Each bedroom does have a closet and there is a closet in the hall but all of them are too small and the Master Bedroom one is just bizarre.  The bars go from back to front of the closet instead of left to right.  SO MUCH WASTED SPACE!  Plus, all the other closets aren't wide enough for a hanger to fit from front to back . . . the hangers actually slide sideways when you close the door.

3. 2 bathrooms . . . ideally 2 and 1/2 - In part, this is due to the fact that I have 4 kids and having 1 bathroom makes mornings insane (just imagine what it's going to be like when we move in with my parents and there is 1 bathroom for 8 of us!).  I would like, however, some sort of bathroom/powder room on the first floor so that guests can use it.  That way they don't have to walk past every room in the house to use the potty . . . less to worry about cleaning!

4.  A built in dishwasher - we have a "portable" one right now and I don't like it.  It has done a good job but I really really want a dishwasher that I can load and run without having to put my sink out of commission.

5.  Central Air Conditioning - I never had it when I was growing up but I will have it in my next house.  The window units we have do a great job of keeping the house cool but they are SO loud!!!  I would sometimes have to turn them off so that I could think and the house would heat up pretty quick once I did that.

6.  First Floor Laundry - This is something I never thought about when we were buying this house because it was just the 2 of us but carrying laundry baskets up and down the steps for 6 people really stinks.

7.  Storage in the bathroom - WAY more important that I realized.  The little above the toilet cupboard that we have just doesn't cut it.

8.  Hardwood or at least no carpet in the dining room or kitchen - toddlers eating in a room with carpet just wears on the carpet.  My carpets are sooo beat.  I think it would be SO much easier to use a broom and a swiffer to clean up after dinner than trying to wipe up and vacuum a carpet.

9.  An office, den or family room - we NEED an extra room.  Right now I use the dining room table for my laptop and all of my files and papers from work are in milk crates in the corner.  I need a desk and filing cabinet but we don't have any extra room for it with the kids in both bedrooms.

10.  No pine trees - they make a much bigger mess than we anticipated.  I'm not saying I don't like trees.  I like trees and I like landscaping and I like flowers, bushes and all of that.  Pine trees leave needles all over the yard, though, and stepping on one of those bad boys in your bare feet HURTS!

*As a side note . . . . my children are insisting that our next house will have a pool.  So, we at least need the yard for a pool even if we don't find a house with a pool.

The Sunday Sip: Opps!

It's my week to write the weekly feature, The Sunday Sip, and . . . . well, my Sunday Sip blogger never responded back to me.  :(

Funny thing is, I can't be upset about it!  We have all had those times when we forget to do something or mean to do something and then it just doesn't get done.  So, whatever the reason is . . . I can totally relate.  In fact, I should have this post up already BUT I fell asleep last night without writing it and then didn't remember until this morning when I started thinking about all the things I have to do around here.  There are a lot of things I have to do, by the way.  I think I may have mentioned that we are moving in with my parents for a while because we FINALLY sold our house but don't have a new house that we like to move into.  We are on the final countdown - next Saturday is moving day - and when I was walking down the steps this morning my first thought was, "This is the last Sunday I will walk down these steps in the morning".  I've got mixed emotions about the whole thing . . . but mostly, I'm ready for the next adventure!

Anyway . . . since I don't have a new Sunday Sip blogger to introduce you all to, I figured I would just list the bloggers who have been featured!  Stop by a few and see what they are up to!  Be sure to tell them that More Than Mommies sent you!  I can't believe we have over 20 amazing ladies on this list and that we have about 10 more in the line up!

Have a fantastic Sunday - and say a little prayer for me that I get all this packing done with my 3 year olds running around!  It's been *ahem* damn near impossible . . . . difficult.

#5QF

Playing 5QF again this week!  Head on over and join the fun!

1. What is one grammar issue you cannot let go without correction?

Christine - For those that don't know, I have my BA in English. So, it would seem, I could be a badge carrying member of the grammar police. But I make my fair share of mistakes. As much as it pains me to see "it's" instead of "its" or "there" instead "their," I've been guilty of committing these same errors when I am trying to write quickly and don't put my proofreading glasses on. I don't typically go around correcting grammar. Phrases like "I seen this guy" grate on my ear, but my Dad uses "I seen" phrases regularly. I would never think of correcting him-- He's 58 --So I'm pretty sure he's not interested in hearing his oldest daughter tell him he's wrong. Even if he was okay with it, his use of the phrase would be a hard habit to break. Out of the mouth of my dad, it has become endearing. I save my corrections for when someone specifically asks me to proofread something, or if I'm helping my kids with something for school. It's not my job to police friends, neighbors, and loved ones, so, just as I handle most situations, I will continue to lead by example.

Janene - Grammar issues?  Well, I have to with Christine.  I'm not one to go and correct someone.  However, when I see people use "than" instead of "then" it irks me A LOT!  I also can't stand double negatives . . . You know, "I don't have no money" - that kind of thing.  I have to credit my correct grammar usage to my 8th grade teacher, Mike Stitt, who told us that if we use double negatives we will sound uneducated and people will treat us differently.  I know that is an EXTREMELY "snobby" thing to say but it stuck with me because I think in some respects it was pretty honest.  Not to say that we don't all make mistakes.  I'd be the first one to admit that I've read some previous blog posts and wondered what the heck I was thinking when I typed what I did.  No one is perfect . . . which is why I really don't go around correcting people.  Even though it does get under my skin a bit.

2. What's your favorite thing about fall?

Christine - I love the crispness in the air-- I love that humidity is low. I love seeing the leaves change their colors. I love pulling out the soup recipes and making other dishes that remind me of cooler weather.

Janene - I can't pick one thing . . . no way.  I love EVERYTHING about Fall!

3. What's your favourite dish to take to a potluck?

Christine - I don't have a favorite. In fact, when it comes to potluck, I like to try new dishes. I'm always looking for something different to bring to a family gathering (They make great guinea pigs. Thankfully we don't have a lot of picky people, so I know they will try almost anything!)

Janene - Umm . . . is it bad to say that I've only ever really gone to maybe 3 or 4 potlucks and every time I've tried something new because I have no idea what you take to a potluck?  This might be one of those questions I read for EVERYONE who does 5QF just to gain some new recipes!  (And find out what they heck is a "normal" potluck dish!)

4. When do you start Christmas (Holiday) shopping?

Christine - Too late, as far as I'm concerned. But a general dislike of shopping, the desire to pay cash for gifts, and the fact that a kid free shopping trip means arranging babysitters and coordinating schedules, is a recipe for last minute shopping. If it were up to my husband we would be shopping for everyone two days before Christmas! But I try to get out there a few times in the month leading up to the holiday.

Janene - We do almost all our shopping online.  I went to Walmart at midnight on Black Friday last year and it just made me love online shopping even more!  I hate the crowds and the price checking and going to 3 or 4 different stores looking for something.  Plus, (and this is in no way a plug for Amazon . . . just the truth) I LOVE Amazon Prime's free shipping!!!

5. Did you move homes a lot growing up?

Christine - Nope. I had one childhood home and another when I hit middle school and high school, but both were in the same town.

Janene - Us either - we lived in 2 homes as well.  1 from birth to about age 10 and then the next from 10 - 24, when I got married.  Strangely enough - I'm moving back into that house (with my kids, hubby, mom and dad) on the 29th!  Since we are closing on October 3rd and are currently without a house that we want to move into - my parents agreed to let us stay with them until something shows up!

So - fess up . . . what's the potluck recipe you think I have to have?  I'd love to add to my recipe box!

Confession: I Hate Party Planning

My little potato turned 7 this past week.  I cannot believe that seven years have passed since I first set my eyes on her chubby little cheeks and fiery hair.  She has changed so much and come so far in the last seven years, but one thing that hasn't changed is her spunk and zeal for life.

Ava, at almost 3 years old in 2008
Another thing that hasn't changed is my lackluster attitude towards throwing parties. Here's the thing: I want to love planning parties, and I absolutely love to look at all the ideas for themes and I always have a great time during a party...but all the planning and prepping before hand? I don't find it the least bit enjoyable. I feel bad because I just don't have it in me to hand make decorations, bake and decorate a cake, plan activities and games for the little ones, and come up with cute party favors that all coordinate around the perfect theme.  Some mothers live for that stuff...and more power to them. After I read The Happiness Project a couple of years ago, I had an Aha! Moment. And my mantra became, and still is, "Be Christine." As much as I would love to be an organized, party planning maven, that isn't me. I am a fly by the seat of my pants, shopping hating, live in the moment, cross my fingers and hope for the best kind of gal.

This time around, Ava has invited some friends and we have decided on a circus theme. I got the invites out on time and I made a list of everything that I thought would be fun to do circling around that theme. Today I will be running around gathering up all the supplies to make this party a success. I know it doesn't matter as long as Ava and her guests have fun...but why, oh why do we put all this pressure on ourselves to make a party shine when, to be perfectly honest, the kids would be perfectly happy running around the yard and licking the icing off of a cupcake? Don't get me wrong, I am going to try my best to overcome my poor party planning ways....

But if all of my errands don't get done today, and all the perfect party plans in my head don't come to life--I will still call it a success as long as at the end of the day Ava and her friends have smiles and icing on their faces!
Ava, again in 2008

Things I Thought I'd NEVER Do . . . but have totally done

Becoming a mother changes you.  All of a sudden you realize why other parents, who you use to think were BAD parents, did the things you were so appalled by.  Seriously, I remember thinking that I would NEVER put my child on a leash . . . then I had to walk through a crowded mall with a 2 and 3 year old without a double stroller.  I figured it was much safer for me to get the dirty looks from couples without children than it was to go without and risk losing a child.

I honestly had a pregnant woman walk past me and say, "I would never treat my child like a dog" to which I loudly responded, "And I will never see my child's face on the back of a milk carton!"

If it's one thing that has changed since my first child and my fourth, it's that I am much more lax when it comes to what I let my children do . . .

Just another example of me letting my children act like a dog!  :)

Wow, is that a big piece of cake, or what???

Contrary to popular belief, we aren't trying to pickle him.

Here's a list of 10 things I have done as a parent that I would have judged other parents for or NEVER imagined myself doing . . . but be warned - if you read these you HAVE to share one of yours in the comments!  You HAVE to!  I don't want to feel like I'm the only one!

1)  I have let my child pull an entire box of Kleenex out of the box because he was happy, laughing and not bothering me . . . totally worth the 2.49 I paid for the box.

2) I have let my child run around naked in the backyard and even *gasp* pee in the backyard.  It was easier than leaving the 3 other ones outside or get them all inside soaking wet so 1 could go potty.

3) I have given my child dessert before dinner.

4) I let my children sleep in my bed . . . I also let them cry it out in their cribs.  I'm not sure what I thought I was going to do if I didn't do one of these but I never agreed with the cry-it-out method until my second child (I'm a 100% believer in it now) and I swore I would never let them invade my bed until one of them was sick and miserable and needed me as much as I needed sleep.

5) I gave my child my cell phone to make them be quiet.

6) I let my kids put stickers all over me and draw on me with washable marker when I wasn't feeling so hot. . . . kept them happy and I knew where they were the whole time.

7) I let my kids eat and color in church.  I use to think that people should make their kids pay attention in church and I STILL do - at least once they hit 2nd grade!  :)

8) I let my child open and ingest a sugar packet at a table in a restaurant so that they would be quiet.

9) I told my child, "Well . . . hit him back".  I'm opposed to violence and really think that kids should try to talk it out or walk away if possible . . . but that kid, he needed hit.

10) I let my kids eat chocolate cake for breakfast.  I know . . . Bill Cosby did it so I figured what the heck.  :)

The Sunday Sip: Fill Up Your Cup with Kristin at O'Leary Family Adventure

Welcome to The Sunday Sip, the weekly feature where we take a break from our normal routine and sit down to chat with another fabulous blogger. It's a great way to meet a new friend in the blogosphere. If you're new here and would like to learn more, visit The Sunday Sip tab above. You can fill out our simple form if you would like to be featured! In the meantime, pull up a chair and fill up your cup!

Today we are happy to have with us: Kristin from An O'Leary Family Adventure

Hi, Kristin! How about you introduce yourself to our readers:

Introduce myself? I find this is easier on the internet rather than in person. I'm so glad this is not an oral presentation. Whew!

Usually I hear mom over one hundred times per day, but I've been called Kristin by friends, Kris by very dear friends, Babe by my husband, and Mrs. O by my students. It's reasonable to say that I have as many job titles as I do names. Currently I am a mom, wife, daughter, sister and friend, who enjoys taking care of a little blog (An O'Leary Family Adventure), cooking for the family, and teaching. Although I'm not a full-time teacher yet, my goal is to land an awesome teaching position with young ones. Most times I learn just as much from them as they do from me. Aside from teaching, I enjoy writing, photography, web design, and singing.
I feel like I'm talking to a sister from another mister! I, Christine, also enjoy writing, photography, and singing! Could we be drinking the same thing too? What's in your cup this morning?

Is there any better way to wake up than with a warm mug filled to the brim with silky smooth coffee and the aroma of hazelnut filling your lungs? Oh...that was supposed to be a simple question?? Okay...hazelnut coffee with skim milk and sugar.

Well there's the difference. I'm a tea drinker--chai tea. I've been jazzing it up with pumpkin spiced creamer these days. It FEELS like fall. Might as well embrace it, right? So tell us about "An O'Leary Family Adventure." How did you come up with the name?

The awesome idea of 'An O'Leary Family Adventure' came quite quickly to my mind. I started this blog about a year ago because my husband, daughter, and I had moved from Atlanta, GA to Virginia Beach, VA. My husband was offered a job in VA and we talked and talked about whether it was the right decision for us, and I mostly wanted to move to explore another piece of the country. Therefore, when we moved I felt as if the blog was a good way to share and track with family and friends back in GA the daily adventures of life here in Virginia.

Well it definitely fits. So tell us, if you could, where should we start? What's the one post you want everyone that comes to your blog to read?

Hmmmmm....

One post? This is a toughie. It's hard to choose one that sums up everything I do. I suppose it'd be the one written for my eighth anniversary this past August (My Life at Eight Years of Marriage). That post truly speaks to the subjects most on my heart: my husband and daughter. It's a post that speaks to the ever growing heart of a mom/wife.
I can't wait to read that one! I've loved what I've seen so far. My first impression of your blog was that it was your space to explore your love of taking pictures, and connecting with others through your writing. You seem to be a truly thoughtful blogger and it shines through in everything from your posts, to your sweet blog design. Is this what you had in mind when you began to blog? Where do you see your blog going and growing to in the future?

You hit the nail right on the head! I'm so thankful somebody else could see what I was trying to get across. When I first began my blog I had in mind what I wanted to do as far as design, but I didn't know how to get it without paying for it. Paying for blog design was never an option for me, plus I enjoy the challenge of learning something new (a great motto: Never tell yourself you can't do something). So I began researching and designing banners and such to use on my blog. Pretty soon my love for blog design grew and now I do it fairly regularly for myself (I like to change things up) and others (pro bono so far).

As far as photography goes, before blogging I would always carry my camera with me everywhere to capture the beauty of this world. I saw blogging as an avenue to share the way I see things and to track the footsteps of my life with my family and friends through these images. Plus, who doesn't like seeing beautiful pictures on a blog? It adds visual interest, which is what I go for. I find adults, especially moms, have very little attention span these days, and pictures are worth a thousand words...so, that's what I try to do.

With that said, of course I see my blog growing into something more than what it is now. The hardest part is getting your name out there, but that's what I'm trying to do now and which is why I'm so thankful for this opportunity. A goal of mine is to eventually have guests posts from people across the world who can share their outlook on life with others. Life is all about the adventure, not just the destination.

You are off to a great start, Kristin. And one more question--our final and favorite one: Tell us, what makes you "More than a Mommy"?

First off, let me just say that the name of your blog is AH-MAH-SING! More Than Mommies. It's too often that mommies forget that they are more than just that. Mommyhood is great and all, but there's so much more to contribute to life. Besides being a mommy, I love sharing my thoughts through words and pictures (is that obvious yet?), seeing the delight on people's faces when they bite into something scrumptious from my kitchen, pretending to be an expert explorer of this earth, and spreading Love to others in every way I can.

Thanks again for allowing me to come say hi during The Sunday Sip! What you do is awesome.

We loved having you, Kristin, and we cannot wait to join you on your adventure! We can't wait to see more from you. Now, dear readers, how about we head over to An O'Leary Family Adventure and have one of our own!  Leave Kristin some comment love and don't forget to tell her that "More Than Mommies sent you"!

You can also check out Kristen's Pinterest Boards as well! See you there!

5 Question Friday - Hee Bee Gee Bees

I must mention that my little Ava potato turned 7 yesterday! We are celebrating as a family today since yesterday was a crazy day of school and dance classes. I'm happy that it's Friday. The week went super fast for me, but the girls are doing their "I'm Ti-i-i-i-ired" whining today. I'm glad that I can say to them, "It's FRIDAY! You can sleep in tomorrow! Yippee!" (they never sleep in when given  the chance...but they always seem happier about the prospect.)
Want to play along with us?  Pick your favorite question and give us your answer in the comments!
1. How long did it take for you to find your wedding dress?
2. Someone in your general vicinity releases a NASTY smelling fart. Do you say anything or blow it off?
3. What is the scariest thing that happened to you or scared you recently?
4. Favorite brand and flavor of ice cream.
5. Are you able to sleep well in hotels?

Question 1:

Christine - I'm trying to remember...I think I went to one store, tried on quite a few dresses there and finally decided on something that the sales woman had pulled off the rack for me. It was not a dress I would have picked for myself, but as soon as I put it on-- it's hard to describe--a feeling came over me.  When I looked in the mirror I had an overwhelming feeling of my grandmother - my Father's Mother who passed away when I was a Sophomore in high school. I cried, my mom cried, and my sisters cried and I knew it was "the one."  It was a strapless, A-line dress with an average length train and it had bead work on the bodice and around the hem. Nothing extremely extravagant. Perfect for me!

Janene:  I guess Christine and I are just easy going gals because I went to one store and ended up in the 3rd or 4th dress I tried on.  I was browsing through the dresses in my size and came across one with a little color in it and I knew immediately that I had to try it on.  It's not that I don't like lace and sequence and all the frilly stuff . . . I do.  I wanted something different, though.  Traditional but also a little bit unique.

Question 2:

Christine - I probably try my best to blow it off.  Everyone farts. Sure it is impolite to let one rip in public, but it isn't something you always have control over. Right? I know I've had extremely painful gas before and it's much better to get it out than keep it in. Why embarrass someone?  They know they did it, and they probably are mortified by it being so stinky, what is the point of drawing attention to it?  I would probably just move on and if I was stuck in that spot I might hold my breath for a bit until it passes.  If I'm at home and it's my husband or kids, I would make a bigger deal and lovingly tease them or make some big show about how they are suffocating me and scream "EWWWW" and run from the room!

Janene - I would say that I would blow it off, too.  I agree that it's not polite but it's not always something that you can prevent.  For example, Nate let one go in church the other day . . . now - off all the places to publicly fart, I would think church has to be up on the top of the NEVER EVER list.   He did it, though.  Jerry was mortified and I had to chuckle.  We talked about how it's inappropriate to do that in public but especially in church.  My quick-as-a-whip son replies with, "If God has a problem with me tooting in church, why did he make me so I have to toot?"  I guess we can just add that to the list of questions we are going to ask once we get to the pearly gates.  :)

Question 3:

Christine - I'm trying to think of a recent time when I was scared and nothing jumps to my mind! Maybe I don't scare easily.  Actually now that I think about it, I did have a nightmare last week that involved my oldest.  In my dream she died suddenly and unexpectedly. God, I hate even typing that. The dream was very realistic. I was scared and sobbing in my sleep. In fact, I think when I woke up my body was sobbing. My husband had already gone to work, so I had that icky feeling of being in between dream and reality and feeling uncomfortable. Of course I ran to check on all my children...and everyone was okay. And then I remembered hearing that when you have a dream that someone dies it means that they will live a long life. I don't know if that's true or just something we tell ourselves as a comfort--but I felt fine after that!

Janene - The scariest thing that happened to me recently involved my kids, too.  3 year old twin boys are tough.  They head opposite directions whenever they can.  The test your limits and they have no fear.  With all of that in mind . . . you can imagine how terrifying it can be to be outside in an unconfined area with them.  We were hanging out in our front yard - me and the boys - and Dean suddenly decided to test his limits and go beyond where he is normally allowed to go.  I called for him and he kept going.  I stood up to follow him . . . a little worried about leaving David to chase him but what could I do?  By the time I caught up to Dean, he was running down a very busy street . . . the MIDDLE of the street!  It felt like a long time to me but it was probably less than 10 seconds.  I still imagine what would have happened if I wouldn't have gotten to him in time.

Question 4:

Christine: Whatever is on sale. Seriously, I'm not brand loyal when it comes to icecream--although I have tasted some that are smoother and creamier--I don't eat it enough to care.  I'm not an ice cream fiend. I usually prefer a savory snack. But I do enjoy an occasional scoop. My favorites are a DQ Heath Bar Blizzard, a scoop of mint chocolate chip, white house cherry, Chocolate Raspberry, or plain old vanilla. Sometimes I get in the mood for a Brown Cow--and vanilla ice cream is the only thing that will do in that case (although some people make a Brown Cow with chocolate--not me)!

Janene - Chocolate.  Double Chocolate.  Dark Chocolate.   I love Chocolate Ice Cream.  I'm not a HUGE Ice Cream fan - I'd rather have a bag of Oreos and some milk - but if I'm having Ice Cream . . . I want Chocolate.

Question 5:
Christine: If I think too much about bed bugs than I have trouble falling asleep in hotels. I'm usually able to keep myself in a state of ignorant bliss--I don't let things bug me too much (haha), and then I can sleep like a rock--a bed bug repelling rock. Usually when we sleep in a hotel it reiterates the fact that we definitely need a new mattress at home. Why do we keep putting it off? Who knows, there is always something more important to replace than the mattress I guess.

Janene - I sleep okay.  I usually end up walking up WAY too early, though.  I'm not sure what it is about hotels that makes me want to get up and get moving ASAP.  I guess because it isn't "home" and I don't have the 1,000,000,000 things to do like I do when I'm here.  When I have things to do . . . I procrastinate.  When I don't have anything to do (which almost NEVER happens) I have all the energy in the world.  Go figure!

September Sponsor Spotlight

So this is our first month opening up our sidebar and blog posts to sponsors. It's been quite an exciting adventure. Every time a new sponsor steps up and we get a message in our inbox from PassionFruit my heart literally pitter-patters.

You like us! You like us! And it makes me so excited (and I'm sure I speak for Janene as well) to see what this little blog can become with your support. From our devoted readers, to those who leave thoughtful comments, to those who support us with a sponsorship, we just want to take a moment to say thank you.  Every little page view is appreciated. Every tweet, pin, and Facebook like is noticed and is like a virtual hug from you to us! So in addition to our sincere thanks,  we are sending out the love today to some very special people.

See those buttons in the sidebar? Have you visited any of those wonderful people yet? If not, I invite you to give them a click--I don't think you will be disappointed!

Our Highlight Sponsor this month is Joy by the Yard. A freshly opened Etsy shop specializing in fabric. I would be remiss if I didn't mention that this is a new venture that my mom and I are working on together (disclosure, peeps!). My mom is a passionate seamstress and together we've set up shop. She specializes in custom drapery and home decor--everything from pillows to table runners. The shop will eventually include a little bit of everything, but for now I've included a small fabric collection and a few pillows. If something strikes your fancy, or you have any questions or would like to place a custom order you can 'convo'  Joy by the Yard (that's Etsy speak for "send us a message") and we will help you out!

We first introduced you to Samantha, the blogger behind The Peanuts Gang, on our popular Sunday feature: The Sunday Sip.  Since then, Samantha has been up to some wonderful things on her blog: she planned A Very Hungry Birthday with a DIY budget-friendly twist that her son really seemed to enjoy. If you missed her Baby Bee themed Baby Shower in June, you must check it out. ADORABLE doesn't begin to describe it.  (I hope you have your "pin it" button ready on your toolbar!) Samantha does some really fun reviews and giveaways, and whenever we visit we are sure to be greeted by her adorable boys! We can't wait to see what Samantha has in store next at The Peanuts Gang!

Let's take a hop across the pond to visit Barratts shoes.  They have a huge selection of footwear for Men, Women, and Children.  From casual to formal, Wellies to sandals, Barratts has what you are looking for at an affordable price. They offer free shipping on some orders and right now they have a 20% off sale going on. So if you are visiting us from the UK you must give them a click! I love how the internet makes this world a small place. I get giddy just thinking about our readers across the great wide ocean! Thank you Barratts!

Julie at The Naptime Review is another blogger we introduced on the Sunday Sip not too long ago. In the short time between now and then we have been blown away by Julie and her blog. More adorable kids, reviews, but what we think is extra special about The Naptime Review is Julie's ability to connect bloggers. Monday Mom Mingle is one of her successful link-ups and it seems Julie is always reaching her hand out into the world wild webosphere and connecting people. She frequently has fabulous guest bloggers so we get to discover more great blogs! If there was a "hostess with the mostest" award, we would bestow it upon her.

And of course we can't forget our other sponsors:

We would love to see your blog or business in our sidebar. Please visit our Sponsor Us page to get started. And three lucky readers can win an All That spot. Entry below!

You Too Can Learn Something New

Tuesday night was "Meet the Teacher" night at the school. Every year they have an ice cream social at the beginning of the year and it's  chance to visit your child's classroom, meet their teacher, and find out what they will be up to for the school year. Last year was really overwhelming for us because our girls were transferring from a small private school to a much larger public school, but I'm happy to say that this year felt more like home! My second daughter was roaming the halls and classrooms like she owned the place and was so proud to show me all of her haunts: her 1st grade classroom, art room, library, gym, music room, computer room and cafeteria etc. And of course the girls had ice cream.

I feel very relieved that all of my girls seem to love school so far. I am completely amazed at what they know and can do.  I try to remember back to 1st grade and all I can remember is sorting through a box of teeny-tiny alphabet pieces and putting them in order.  And we were just starting to read.  My first grader and third grader have been reading (well, I might add) since kindergarten. Oh times have changed! The most important thing that I am trying to instill in my kids is a love of learning. I hope that they carry it with them straight through college.

I remember going through a period of time where I didn't really care too much about school. I was more concerned with friends and trying to get a boyfriend. And I did not apply myself. The sad part is that I really didn't need to do much to still manage to pull A's and B's with a a few C's sprinkled in for good measure.  When I got to college, I got serious.  And it was in that setting that I really felt my love of learning bloom. Almost every single professor was passionate about their subject and that made learning extremely interesting for me. I remember saying that I wish I could be a lifelong student.

Wishes do come true.

Sure, I haven't had much experience in a classroom setting. But...*dramatic arm sweep* The world is my classroom.  Seriously though, my forays into the classroom since college have been less common than I would like, but that's what happens when you start having babies. Instead of sitting at a desk, I sit (well, I don't sit much these days) and get schooled by them!

Now I look at sitting in a classroom as enrichment:  a blessed break from the education by fire called parenting 401 (after four kids, I'm beyond those basic classes).  Early in our marriage, Jim enrolled both of us (!) into a drawing class--still ranking at the top of the list of best gifts EVER from him.  And a few Christmases ago he bought me a guitar. Thanks to a friend, I picked up on some basics, but I never could move beyond strumming a few awkward chords into the semblance of a passable version of my favorite hits.  The guitar has been gathering dust in my closet for the past few years.

Not anymore, my friends. Stars aligned, and I saw that guitar lessons are offered on the same day, in the same building that my girls take their dance lessons. I am there anyway, so why not take lessons while I'm there and put that beautiful guitar to use?  It feels so wonderful to be learning something new. I have always loved music, and singing, and have always wanted to master an instrument -- but I never had the opportunity to take lessons, until now.

Last week I had my first lesson and I felt like a kid again, nervous, happy, eager to please my teacher. I've even found time to practice every day since then. I feel young and alive. It's because I'm learning something new!

I highly recommend it! It doesn't have to be guitar lessons of course. Maybe you've wanted to learn a different instrument, master a new language, get a college degree, take an art class, take a cooking class, join a writing workshop, take an advanced mathematics course, learn to woodwork, try a new sport. It doesn't matter what it is. Take a step to find out more. Stretch yourself. Grow. Do it, do it, do it! And share what you are learning in the comments below!

When I learn to play a recognizable song, I'll share my progress with you!

Today we are linking up with Shell for Pour Your Heart Out. If you are visiting from that link up be sure to leave your link in the comments so that we can visit you!
